Hungarian retail volume in September rose 4.3% year on year and 1.1% compared with August, according to the KSH release of November 6. The monthly figure is adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects. For domestic retailers, demand relative both to last year's base and to the immediately preceding month provides a useful comparison.
The two growth rates must not be added: their denominators and time horizons differ. In our interpretation, the monthly increase helps assess the recent direction alongside the annual measure, but a single month is insufficient to establish a lasting consumption trajectory.
Under the KSH methodology, volume removes the effect of price changes, so cash receipts and quantities sold must be read separately. Seasonal adjustment of the series can change as new observations arrive.
The October manufacturing purchasing managers' index offers a signal from another part of the economy. Our report on European producer prices provides background on business costs. These indicators measure different activities and cannot replace retail data.
The next specific data point is the October retail release, which KSH says will be published on December 4.
Consistent comparison periods help business planning: annual sales targets should be assessed against an annual base, while short-term changes are best measured against the preceding period.
