Eurostat's 6 October release shows Hungary's calendar-adjusted retail trade volume rising 2.4% year on year in August. The seasonally and calendar-adjusted monthly series, however, fell 0.7% from July. With 2021 set to 100, Hungary's August index stood at 106.3 in the monthly-comparison series and 108.6 in the calendar-adjusted annual-comparison series.
The EU average was milder: retail volume increased 0.1% month on month and 1.2% year on year. EU non-food sales rose 0.5% monthly and 2.2% annually, while automotive-fuel retail fell 1.3% and 1.9% respectively. The indicator tracks the volume of goods sold after price adjustment, rather than nominal revenue.
For Hungarian retailers, the monthly decline alongside annual growth is a mixed signal: volume remains above last year, but momentum weakened between the summer months. Our reports on the EU import barometer and the OPEC+ November output decision provide trade and fuel-market context. The next checkpoint will be the September retail release.
