The Agricultural Economics Institute’s latest poultry report puts Hungary’s average live-weight producer price for slaughter chicken at HUF 418.5 per kilogram in the first 41 weeks of the year, down 6.2% from the same period a year earlier. For domestic farmers and processors, the comparison basis matters: these are producer prices, rather than shop prices.
The AKI release shows an average of HUF 711.0 per kilogram for slaughter turkey, up 10.7% annually. Our calculation puts the difference between the two rates at 16.9 percentage points: 10.7 minus negative 6.2. This measures the distance between growth rates, not the percentage price gap between the products.
Keeping the two sector series separate is useful in business cost planning too. Sales revenue reflects both volume and the price achievable; profit also requires feed, energy, labour and other cost data. We therefore derive neither a shop price nor a company’s profit directly from the producer price.
Our articles on the agricultural trade agenda at the Council and changes to the small-farm investment application provide market and investment context. AKI’s next poultry report may show whether the divergent price paths persist. The original release dates from 20 October; we checked it following the trade-press report of 24 October and do not present it as a new measurement period.
