EU consumer confidence weakened further in October

The flash estimate points to weaker consumer sentiment. Hungarian businesses can assess it alongside actual demand when making stock and order decisions.

The EU consumer confidence indicator fell to −17.3 points in October, according to the European Commission’s flash estimate of 22 October. For Hungarian companies, this is a fresh signal about customers’ mood, particularly when they sell in several EU markets.

The euro-area reading was −17.9 points. The release says confidence “fell further below its long-term average”. September data were revised down following the reinclusion of the Italian survey; the series also contains a methodological break.

In brief

  • The indicator summarises consumers’ sentiment, rather than revenue already received by businesses.
  • Hungarian companies can use it alongside their own orders and sales experience.
  • The full October survey is due on 29 October.

Orders determine the impact

For a business selling household goods or durable consumer products, weaker sentiment may justify planning for several possible demand paths. If buyers postpone larger purchases, money may remain tied up in unsold stock for longer. This is a conditional business relationship: the present indicator cannot establish a decline in sales at a particular Hungarian shop.

Changes in the order book, average basket value and cancellations can help determine whether the company is experiencing an actual shift. Comparing the same product category over comparable periods is useful, since promotions or differences in holiday opening hours can also alter sales. A complete purchasing plan should therefore not be derived from a single survey signal.

Hungarian context and the next data

Our report on September employment data provides further background for assessing domestic purchasing power, while our article on the October central bank decision addresses financing conditions. These answer different questions, and the European sentiment indicator cannot replace either.

Sector-level results in the next full survey may help qualify the present signal. For businesses, the relevant question will be whether sentiment and their own observed demand move in the same direction or present different pictures.
