The Budapest Stock Exchange's BUX index closed October 1 at 139,919.20 points, down 3.63%. OTP fell 6.37% to 39,980 HUF, while MOL ended at 4,830 HUF, down 2.90%. Richter rose 0.24% to 12,400 HUF and Magyar Telekom gained 0.63% to 2,560 HUF. The four closing prices were checked against the official BSE data page.
A risk-off day in Europe
The DAX closed at 24,939.35 points, down 1.03%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 ended at 6,175.45 points, down 1.49%. The CAC 40 declined 1.62% to 7,835.31 points and the FTSE 100 lost 1.68% to 10,428.27 points. Reuters' European market report said banks were under particular pressure, although co-movement does not establish one common cause for every stock.
The US close was much calmer. The S&P 500 finished at 7,666.45 points, up 0.19%; the Nasdaq Composite at 26,871.60 points, up 0.04%; and the Dow Jones at 50,926.56 points, also up 0.04%. Associated Press closing data confirm that the late move remained small.
What it means for Hungarian investors
Hungary's underperformance and OTP's sharp fall increased single-stock risk in domestic portfolios. One session cannot establish whether a lasting trend has begun. Trading volume, company disclosures and the direction of European bank shares will provide the next evidence on the following trading day.
