Updated: 28 September, 19:15 CEST. This is the European-close edition; the final US-close update will be added to this same article.
In one minute
- The BUX closed at 149,155.36 points, down 2,116.71 points or 1.40%.
- OTP’s 3.86% fall contrasted with gains of 1.55% for MOL and 0.79% for Magyar Telekom.
- The DAX, CAC 40, Euro Stoxx 50 and FTSE 100 all moved by less than two-tenths of a percent.
Budapest: OTP dominated turnover
- BUX: 149,155.36 points; daily change: −1.40%.
- OTP: 44,100 forints; daily change: −3.86%.
- MOL: 5,230 forints; daily change: +1.55%.
- Richter: 12,400 forints; daily change: −0.64%.
- Magyar Telekom: 2,560 forints; daily change: +0.79%.
The Budapest Stock Exchange reported equity-market turnover of 44.971 billion forints. OTP accounted for 39.528 billion forints, roughly 88% of that total. This helps explain why the bank’s move was so important to the Budapest market picture, but it does not prove what caused the price decline. By the close, the newsroom had found no fresh primary-source disclosure that tied the fall to a single event.
Europe: major benchmarks stayed in a narrow range
- DAX: 25,374.42 points; daily change: −0.13%.
- Euro Stoxx 50: 6,301.28 points; daily change: −0.02%.
- CAC 40: 8,078.48 points; daily change: +0.01%.
- FTSE 100: 10,684.88 points; daily change: −0.10%.
Europe’s mixed but almost flat close stood in sharp contrast to Budapest’s decline. The figures show divergence, not a demonstrated causal link. For Hungarian investors, the main takeaway from OTP is market concentration: OTP’s index weight and trading activity amplified the effect of a single-stock move on the BUX.
Regular US trading was still under way at this update. The final review will add verified closing levels for the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average. The next checkpoint is the New York close; until then, intraday US prices are not presented as closing values.
