Seasonally adjusted industrial production in the euro area fell 0.5 percent in August from July, while output across the European Union declined 0.3 percent, according to Eurostat's release of 15 October. The figures matter to Hungarian exporters because European customers' willingness to order can affect capacity utilisation.
Compared with the previous August, production was down 1.1 percent in the euro area and 0.2 percent in the EU. Monthly and annual comparisons answer different questions: the former describes recent momentum, while the latter measures the distance from the year-earlier level. These are volume measures, not sales revenues at current prices.
For an individual Hungarian business, the European direction and its own order book need to be read together. An aggregate decline cannot determine any one company's sales: its industry, customers' locations and product mix all matter. A rising share of an export market may also support a different trajectory.
The latest details of Hungarian industrial exports should therefore be considered separately from the European average. Our earlier report on EU producer prices provides the cost-side context. Eurostat lists 16 November as the next industrial release date; whether the decline continues or reverses will be the important new information.
