Hungary’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7% in August, after 4.5% in July, according to Eurostat’s October 1 release. The EU rate stayed at 6.1%. Hungarian employers and jobseekers therefore need to consider both the monthly deterioration at home and the European comparison.
Our calculation gives a monthly rise of 0.2 percentage points and a gap of 1.4 percentage points below the EU rate. These differences answer separate questions: the first tracks change over time, while the second compares locations. Job hunting can become harder even when a country’s international ranking remains relatively favourable.
The rate measures unemployed people as a share of the labour force. A company’s staffing plan also requires evidence for its particular occupation and region; a national average cannot establish how easily a specific factory can recruit. Our coverage of Hungarian industrial output concerns production, while US job openings describe labour demand in a different economy.
The next analytical step is to compare the following month’s reading and any revisions to earlier estimates. This release covers August, rather than the labour market in October. The rate alone does not establish that a particular sector or government measure caused the change.
