Eurostat's October 5 release showed industrial producer prices rising 1.9% in August from July in both the EU and the euro area. Year on year, the increase was 8.0% in the EU and 8.2% in the euro area. Energy drove most of the monthly move: it rose 5.5% in the EU and 5.6% in the euro area, while prices excluding energy increased only 0.2% in both regions.
Hungary also recorded a 1.9% monthly rise and a 4.9% annual increase. The indicator measures domestic factory-gate prices rather than consumer inflation, but it signals the cost environment facing companies. Our analysis of 3.8% euro-area inflation covers the consumer side, while our Friday market close shows the market reaction.
The next Eurostat release is due on November 5. The key question is whether the energy increase passes through to intermediate goods, transport and ultimately Hungarian consumer prices. August's figures are first estimates and may later be revised.
