The European Commission's 8 October notice says the Çerkezköy–Kapıkule railway section will be inaugurated on 9 October 2026. The project received €275 million from the IPA II pre-accession instrument and, according to the Commission, is the largest EU–Türkiye infrastructure investment to date.
The line improves the connection between Istanbul and the Bulgarian border and serves the Middle Corridor freight route through the South Caucasus to Central Asia. The Commission expects shorter transit times, but the notice gives no new journey-time, capacity or freight forecast; those claims will need to be checked against operational data.
For Hungary, the development matters through south-eastern European rail corridors and EU logistics networks. Hungarian carriers and exporters will see cost or time savings only if the Bulgarian, Romanian and Hungarian connections do not retain persistent bottlenecks. The official record of the Corridor VIII conference in Sofia confirms the regional connectivity agenda.
