Hungary’s economy expanded by 0.1% from the previous quarter in the third quarter of 2026, according to the KSH’s first estimate released on 30 October. This points to a modest overall growth environment for domestic businesses, but sectoral and company data remain necessary to assess their own sales and customers’ ability to pay.
The KSH release states that “economic performance grew by 0.1%” quarter on quarter. Growth from the same quarter a year earlier was 1.5%. The quarterly comparison is a seasonally and calendar-adjusted, reconciled volume measure; the annual figure is the same in the raw and adjusted series.
In brief
- Hungarian quarterly growth was 0.1%.
- Annual expansion was 1.5%.
- The EU’s quarterly pace was 0.4 percentage points higher.
Eurostat’s flash estimate of 30 October reports quarterly growth of 0.5% for the EU as a whole. We compare the same quarter and adjusted volume changes: our calculation is 0.5 minus 0.1, a difference of 0.4 percentage points. This is the distance between growth rates, not the ratio of the two economies’ sizes.
The difference between Hungary and the EU can provide demand context for suppliers. A company’s circumstances, however, depend on its product market, customers’ orders and contract pricing. The national average cannot be used to calculate an identical wage increase or rising revenue for every company. The volume indicator removes price effects; revenue recorded at current prices is a different measure.
The October EU sentiment survey provides background on expectations, and the ECB bank survey on financing conditions. Alongside GDP, they should be read as separate questions: what was produced, what businesses expect and how they obtain funding. Together, these three perspectives may offer a more useful planning basis than a single national growth figure.
Eurostat schedules its next third-quarter estimate for 13 November. The current figures remain subject to revision; the composition and changes introduced by revisions will be important in the more detailed release.
