Euro area banks report further tightening of business lending

In the ECB’s 27 October bank survey, the net tightening measure is 9%; demand for business loans declined.

Euro area banks reported further tightening of business lending in the ECB survey published on 27 October. For Hungarian exporters, their customers’ financing environment also matters: access to credit can affect planning for orders and payments.

The bank survey reports net tightening of 9% for business loans in the third quarter. This is the difference between the shares of tightening and easing responses, not an increase in loan interest rates. The net demand measure was minus 6%.

Our assessment is that the two signals raise different business questions. Tighter bank assessment concerns the conditions for obtaining financing; weaker demand concerns how much companies want to borrow. A Hungarian supplier can therefore examine the availability of a customer’s financing separately from the contractual payment schedule. We infer no delay by any particular counterparty from this survey.

We previously covered companies’ own financing experiences and the EU securitisation agreement. Bank and company perspectives are useful together, but their different respondent populations prevent simply combining them. Banks’ next quarterly responses can show whether tightening persists.

Business conclusions should distinguish the survey period from the contract horizon: a quarterly signal does not replace current financial information about a particular counterparty. Examining contractual deadlines together with available working capital can therefore provide a more precise starting point than generalising from a single survey figure.
