Hungarian hauliers get HUF 25 per litre relief

Hungary's government announced a HUF 25-per-litre excise-tax refund through end-2026 for diesel used by trucks above 7.5 tonnes and buses.

According to the government statement of 12 October, excise duty on diesel used by trucks above 7.5 tonnes and buses will be reduced by HUF 25 per litre through the end of 2026. Eligible operators may claim the amount through the NAV interface against invoices. The government estimates a budget cost of about HUF 6 billion.

NiT Hungary confirmed the HUF 25 amount and the end-2026 deadline. MKFE, however, said the support can take effect after amendment and promulgation of the excise-duty law. The announcement date and the actual starting date may therefore differ.

The relief could directly reduce fuel costs for Hungarian road hauliers, but the company-level effect depends on consumption and administration. Tighter toll enforcement is an adopted direction, while revisions to transit, weight and weekend truck restrictions remain under consideration. Related context includes Volkswagen's European EV plan and the IMF's new growth outlook. The next step is publication of the law and NAV procedure.

After entry into force, companies must also check invoice requirements, filing deadlines and any rules for retroactive claims.
