Euro-area construction stops falling monthly, but remains below last year

Eurostat’s first estimate of September 18 shows seasonally adjusted euro-area construction output was unchanged in July 2026 compared with June. It remained 2.0% below a year earlier. For the EU as a whole, the monthly measure fell by 0.3%.

Stagnation means the measured monthly level stopped declining, not that earlier losses were recovered. A falling trend can include an unchanged month, so identifying a turning point requires further evidence.

Geography also matters. The euro area and European Union are different country groups. Hungary belongs in the EU aggregate, but a euro-area figure cannot establish a Hungarian growth rate. Domestic performance needs its own national release.

For developers, new orders, financing costs and delivery schedules matter alongside output. Countries and types of construction follow different paths, making a European average insufficient for timing an investment. The next month’s data and revisions can strengthen or weaken the stabilisation signal.
