Brussels sees stable gas supply, with winter checks still ahead

The European Commission reported stable EU gas supply on September 25 despite storage levels below historical levels. ENTSOG’s winter preparedness report is expected on October 8. The statement is a current assessment, not a certain forecast for the entire winter.

What needs separating? Having enough gas available and securing it at a particular price are different questions. Adequate supply does not establish that a Hungarian factory’s next contract will be cheaper. Procurement arrangements, the timing of consumption and access to alternative energy sources jointly determine business exposure.

Storage levels also need to be assessed alongside expected consumption and opportunities to replenish supplies. A single storage indicator cannot support either panic or unconditional reassurance.

The next important document will set out winter scenarios. Readers should examine the assumptions concerning cold weather and supply disruptions. Describing a conditional risk is not the same as announcing an actual gas shortage. For companies preparing budgets, the useful comparison is between those scenarios and their own procurement arrangements.
