EU underground gas storage stood at 75% of capacity on 21 October, according to ACER’s report published on 27 October. For Hungarian energy purchasers, this is European supply context: it is neither a Hungarian storage indicator nor a live reading for 29 October, so the European average should not be treated as inventory available to a domestic company.
The agency’s summary and original report put storage at 28% at the end of winter 2025–2026, compared with 34% a year earlier. That comparison concerns two winter endpoints; the October reading of 75% refers to a different date. Without that distinction, presenting the figures as a direct annual change would be misleading.
From a procurement perspective, the percentage describes the share of storage capacity that is filled. It cannot be converted into days of supply without consumption data, continuing incoming deliveries and withdrawal capabilities. Companies should separately review their contracted volumes, pricing periods and flexibility terms; an EU average cannot replace those details or by itself establish when a particular company needs to buy more.
Our articles on EU network charges and the hydrogen strategy consultation provide further energy context. The next variables to watch are fresh dated storage readings, actual imports and winter weather. Together, these can refine procurement scenarios; we infer no change in Hungarian household tariffs from this report.
