EU negotiators seek a ten-year extension for organic imports

A provisional Council-Parliament deal would extend transition arrangements for recognised non-EU countries through 2036 while tightening protection of the EU organic logo.

According to the Council's 20 October release, the EU co-legislators reached a provisional agreement on targeted changes to rules for organic production, labelling, certification and trade. Conditions for the organic logo and transitional import rules may affect Hungarian organic-food producers and importers.

The current transitional recognition for 11 non-EU countries whose rules are treated as equivalent would run until 31 December 2036 instead of 31 December 2026. Use of the EU organic logo would require additional production and monitoring conditions. Negotiators rejected a proposal that could have retained the logo with less than 5% non-compliant ingredients from third countries. Temporary flexibility would remain for certain non-organic protein feed.

Our reports on Ukrainian export lanes and the development-bank critical-materials framework cover other trade arrangements. The present deal still requires endorsement by both institutions, legal-linguistic revision and formal adoption. The stated aim is adoption before the end of 2026.
