BKK’s on-the-spot penalty fare rises to HUF 15,000 on 2 November

The increase from HUF 12,000 amounts to 25%. Interior QR codes also help passengers validate digital tickets, but validation cannot wait until an inspection begins.

From 2 November, BKK’s penalty fare paid on the spot or within two working days is HUF 15,000, up from HUF 12,000. The transport organiser’s announcement of 29 October set out the increase alongside changes to digital ticket validation.

For a Budapest passenger, this means an additional HUF 3,000 in such a penalty case. Our calculation puts the increase at 25%: we divided the difference by the previous amount, or 3,000 / 12,000 × 100. This is the change in the specified penalty category; we do not derive an average price increase for the entire ticket range from it.

In brief

  • The change takes effect on 2 November.
  • The two-working-day payment deadline requires separate attention.
  • A purchased digital ticket must also be validated.

Buying and validating a ticket

BKK says a digital ticket “must be validated immediately” after boarding. New interior QR codes on surface services make this step easier. According to the announcement, the interior codes are disabled during ticket inspections.

The practical distinction is between buying a ticket and validating it for use. Passengers should therefore open their ticket before departure and complete the boarding-related step separately. Having a ticket on screen and checking its valid status are two distinct tasks; quicker technical access does not remove the need for this sequence.

BKK’s page listing current and previous fare schedules provides official guidance on the charge. When settling a specific case, the applicable category and deadline must be considered together; relying on a previously remembered amount is insufficient.

Another development in digital passenger information is the e-paper timetable trial at 61 stops. Our article on cemetery transport on 1 November covered measures with a different period of validity; its special services should not be treated as an unchanged Monday timetable.

The next specific deadline is the affected passenger’s own two-working-day payment deadline, which starts from the penalty event in question.
