New conditions for buses travelling at 100 km/h

A new technical regime for permits allowing buses to travel at 100 km/h takes effect on 10 October, with two-year renewals after year 15.

A regulation published in issue 146 of the Hungarian Gazette on 5 October rewrites the conditions under which a bus may receive a permit to travel at 100 km/h. The official Gazette sets technical requirements for brakes, tyres, seat belts and tachographs. A permit may be issued only for an M2 or M3 bus carrying seated passengers.

The initial permit may remain valid for 15 years from first registration. It can then be renewed for two-year periods, but no later than the end of the vehicle’s twentieth calendar year. Buses older than 15 years require a separate expert inspection and certification. A black “100” sign on a white background must also be placed at the rear. The rule takes effect on 10 October.

For Hungarian passengers and operators, the change is both a safety and a cost issue: additional inspections of older intercity fleets cost money, while the higher-speed permit can remain only with verified technical condition. Related background covers the new decision forum for Budapest developments and the Rákosrendező development body. The next verifiable point is implementation after entry into force.
