US industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September

The Fed also revised August’s growth upward. Hungarian exporters should assess the US industrial improvement alongside their own orders and product markets.

US industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September from the previous month, according to the Federal Reserve’s release of 16 October. The seasonally adjusted measure increased 2.2 percent from a year earlier. For Hungarian suppliers, this is one signal about external demand conditions, not direct evidence of domestic orders.

August’s monthly change was revised to a 0.1 percent increase from the previously reported flat reading. Manufacturing output rose 0.3 percent monthly in September. The overall industrial measure includes mining and utilities alongside manufacturing, so its headline should not be read as the performance of factories alone.

The production index follows output volumes, not corporate revenue or stock-market returns. For a Hungarian company, its export product, the customer’s inventory decisions and contract timing can each shape the actual business impact. Individual industries or firms can follow a different path even when the national figure improves.

Our report on Hungarian industrial exports provides the domestic starting point, while the new US producer-price figures describe the cost side. September’s figure is preliminary and may be revised. The Fed has announced an annual revision for 24 November; comparisons will also require attention to the updated time series and methodology.
