According to the KSH release of September 16, gross monthly earnings for full-time employees in Hungary averaged HUF 745,500 in July 2026, while the gross median was HUF 618,200. Both are monthly amounts, but they answer different questions.
The average relates total earnings in the covered population to employee numbers. The median marks the middle of the earnings distribution, with equal numbers below and above it. High salaries can lift the average substantially without the middle employee receiving that amount. Neither measure is a job offer for a specific occupation.
Pay negotiations need a suitable comparison. Sector, experience, region and working hours belong alongside the national figure. Comparing gross earnings with take-home pay without accounting for tax circumstances is misleading. The employer’s total cost is also different from gross salary.
July’s release is therefore a reference point, not an assessment of an individual’s pay. Reading the average and median together in the next release can help show how broadly change is spread. One month, without examining the composition of earnings, cannot establish an equal improvement for every worker.
