China’s gross domestic product grew 4.5% in the third quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, following 4.3% in the second quarter. The statistical data are quoted from the website of the National Bureau of Statistics, in its release of 19 October. For Hungarian businesses connected to Chinese customers or suppliers, the national indicator offers context on the direction of demand.
The agency’s preliminary estimate at constant prices shows year-on-year growth of 4.6% for the first three quarters. The quarterly and nine-month figures cover different periods: the latter is not the third quarter’s standalone result. Nor should the difference between year-on-year growth rates be treated as a quarter-on-quarter change in production.
We do not calculate a Hungarian exporter’s order book from the national aggregate. That requires separate examination of the product market, the partner’s ability to pay, the specific contract and the settlement currency. Delivery and financing terms can differ within the same economic environment; the release establishes neither automatic Hungarian orders nor a currency effect.
Our earlier reports on the global economic outlook and different segments of China’s property market provide other bases for comparison. The next question is how far subsequent sector data and company order announcements corroborate aggregate growth. We do not turn this into a new official forecast.
