China's commerce ministry formally opened an anti-dumping investigation on October 3 into p-nitrotoluene imported from the EU. The chemical is used in pharmaceuticals, pesticides and dyes, giving the case significance beyond one narrow product.
The probe covers alleged dumping from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026 and industry injury from January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2026. The ministry said Chinese producers filed their complaint on September 14. The normal deadline is October 3, 2027, with a possible 6-month extension in special circumstances.
Direct exposure for Hungarian companies depends on supply chains not detailed in the notice. The broader risk is a denser EU–China trade-defence environment. Our reports on the EU import barometer and China's credit stimulus provide context. For Hungarian pharmaceutical and crop-protection producers, indirect feedstock costs and alternative sourcing may be the main business risks. Company exposure should be mapped through supplier origin, contractual pricing and the availability of substitutes. The opening of an investigation is confirmed; no tariff has been decided. The next step is registration and submissions by affected EU exporters.
