President Donald Trump named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead a new federal AI task force on October 4, according to the Associated Press report. The group also includes FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, defence technology official Emil Michael and personnel director Scott Kupor, and will report to the president and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Its stated role is to coordinate federal AI policy and engage companies, consumer and public-interest groups, religious organisations and critical-infrastructure providers. The announcement did not include legislation, a budget or an implementation deadline, so the group's practical authority will become clearer only with its first formal actions.

Our coverage of the Washington AI investigation and our background on AI transparency in Europe explain the regulatory link. The next concrete signal will be the task force's written mandate and first public decision.
