GM’s earnings ratio improves alongside new repurchase authority

We calculate original ratios from the new results. Two charts show operating changes and narrower annual guidance, separately from an investor’s forint return.

In brief

  • GM’s revenue-based adjusted earnings ratio improved.
  • The narrower annual guidance range has an unchanged midpoint.
  • Repurchase authorisation cannot establish a guaranteed share return.

General Motors reported third-quarter revenue of USD 50.015 billion and adjusted EBIT of USD 4.106 billion on 20 October, compared with USD 48.591 billion and USD 3.376 billion a year earlier. Our division gives a ratio rising from 6.95% to 8.21%. A Hungarian retail investor needs to examine operating improvement, capital returns and returns measured in forints together, using separate calculations.

More adjusted earnings per unit of revenue

We compare figures from the original statement for the same group, the same quarter and the same monetary unit. The formula is adjusted EBIT divided by revenue, multiplied by one hundred. The difference between the unrounded ratios is 1.26 percentage points. Our calculation puts annual revenue growth at 2.93%; the change in the earnings ratio is therefore not the percentage growth in sales.

Own adjusted EBIT to revenue ratio

EBIT means earnings before interest and taxes; the adjusted version also includes the company’s specified adjustments. It is not a cash balance or income directly available for distribution to shareholders. Comparability requires reading the reconciliation too: the nature, recurrence and cash-flow effects of adjustments are different questions from calculating the ratio.

In her letter to shareholders, Chair and Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra wrote: “GM is performing well”. This is management’s assessment. Our narrower conclusion is that more adjusted earnings accompanied the revenue examined; we do not establish future demand or share undervaluation from this ratio.

For Hungarian industrial readers, examining group figures is a useful method, but an American carmaker’s statement is not a Hungarian supplier order book. Assessing a particular partner requires the product, contract, currency and payment terms. Individual activities may differ despite a stronger aggregate metric, so the whole company and an individual business relationship need separate assessment.

A narrower range with the same midpoint

Full-year adjusted EBIT guidance is USD 14.5 billion to USD 15.5 billion, against the previous USD 14 billion to USD 16 billion. Our arithmetic midpoint is USD 15 billion in both cases; the range width narrowed from USD 2 billion to USD 1 billion, a reduction of 50%. This measures the announced interval, not the probability that the forecast will be achieved.

Own annual guidance range

The higher lower bound and lower upper bound must be read together. An unchanged midpoint does not imply an unchanged share price: we do not fully know investors’ previous expectations or valuation assumptions. We therefore do not substitute assumptions for verified consensus or a price target.

The company also announced a new multi-year share repurchase authorisation of USD 20 billion. Its document says the previous USD 6 billion programme has been completed. The new authorisation has no expiry date and execution may be suspended or discontinued; the authorised amount is not an amount already paid. Actual subsequent spending will be shown in repurchase disclosures.

Shares outstanding at the end of September were 849 million, against 904 million at the previous year-end. We calculate a reduction of 6.08%. Holding earnings constant, that denominator change alone would increase earnings per share by 6.48%. This example uses balances at two dates, not the quarterly weighted-average diluted share count, so we do not calculate actual reported EPS from it.

Assessing repurchases also requires the price paid and liquidity retained by the company. The same authorisation can retire different numbers of shares at different prices, so without a verified purchase price we estimate no future share count. Shareholders also need to consider alternative investments or debt reduction forgone by the company. That is a comparison to investigate, not proof of waste or guaranteed value creation. A programme’s success should therefore be assessed using subsequent execution and financing data, rather than the size of its authorisation.

Further factors enter a forint return

Our earlier Cleveland-Cliffs analysis and examination of J.B. Hunt’s earnings ratio also separated operations from investor cash flows. This analysis highlights a different capital-allocation question: how to read the earnings ratio, guidance interval and share-count change together. We do not rank companies with different business models.

Investor.gov’s explanation treats currency movements and costs as separate risks of international investing. Our conditional example assumes an 8% USD total return, a 5% fall in USD/HUF and a 1% charge deducted once from final value. Multiplying 1.08 × 0.95 × 0.99 and then subtracting one gives a HUF return of 1.57%. This is neither an actual GM return nor a currency forecast.

Total return means the combined effects of asset prices and distributions, under the chosen reinvestment and settlement assumptions. The model uses a single holding period and unhedged currency exposure. Forint appreciation reduces the domestic-currency value of USD returns under this notation; a different currency path would produce a different result. We use no unverified current conversion rate.

Payment timing also affects the investor’s return.

On an actual account, purchase, sale, conversion and account charges can arise at different times. Taxes, inflation, possible currency hedging and investments made in several instalments are excluded. The cost is an assumption, not a provider quote; the broker’s own tariff and actual cash movements need separate checking. A single percentage estimate cannot describe every account history.

In a favourable scenario, the improved operating ratio accompanies sustained cash generation and repurchases do not displace necessary investment. In the risk scenario, weaker demand, cost pressure or deterioration in the composition of adjustments could reduce flexibility. These are possibilities to examine, not established future events. We assign neither invented probabilities nor price targets or personalised purchase instructions to them.

The method stays consistent: select amounts from the primary table, then divide, subtract or calculate a simple interval, rounding only for presentation. Both charts are original work rather than copied company graphics. Readers can reproduce the ratio, interval width and conditional currency example using the same inputs.

In subsequent company disclosures, actual cash generation, executed repurchases and the share count can together provide new evidence. Until then, it remains open how the operating improvement translates into sustainable distribution capacity and how much reaches a Hungarian investor after conversion and total costs.
