The Council of the EU identified the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest on 2026-09-28. The decision covers drones and counter-drone capabilities, maritime and seabed defence, space, air and missile defence, and monitoring the eastern flank.
The Commission's July 3 proposal described the stage before formal designation. The projects can now qualify for EDIP funding through a dedicated procedure. The Commission allocated €325 million in the programme to establishing and deploying these projects; that is not the total long-term investment requirement.
Editorial analysis. Cooperation may align the needs of several countries. Different technical requirements can nevertheless complicate joint procurement: a political priority must become a usable specification and contract.
For Hungarian suppliers, actual participation terms, licensing, security requirements and the customer matter more than a project's name. The decision does not establish a specific Hungarian corporate order. Delivery capacity and maintenance costs are also part of the commercial picture.
Funding decisions, participants' responsibilities and milestones are the next checkpoints. A designated project, a contracted development and an operational capability are separate stages; delays or divergent requirements can change the outcome.
