CDs and DVDs top the EU’s detained counterfeit goods list

Recorded discs accounted for 29.3% of items in the EU’s 2025 data. The category includes games and software as well as music and films.

Recorded CDs and DVDs formed the largest category of counterfeit items detained in the EU in 2025, accounting for 29.3%, according to the Commission and EUIPO report summary published on 22 October. For Hungarian buyers of music and film releases, the origin of a physical copy therefore remains relevant.

The category also contains games and application software, so its share cannot be attributed exclusively to music and film. The statistics count products subject to enforcement action. They cannot be used to calculate the counterfeit share of shops’ entire inventories or the income lost by an individual Hungarian creator.

When buying, an identifiable distributor, the edition’s name and a purchase receipt can together help establish which copy is entering a collection. Neither a low price nor a familiar cover replaces checking the edition details. This provides a useful approach particularly for rare recordings and multi-disc series.

Two earlier articles, on EU digital rules and small packaging producers, address the broader environment for selling cultural products online. They concern different regulatory matters, rather than legal consequences of the present detention figures. To assess the cultural sector more precisely, the next detailed breakdown should be examined for distinctions between types of works and distribution channels.
