New German and Slovenian prosecutors appointed to the EPPO

The Council of the EU appointed Christopher Wenzl as European Prosecutor for Germany and Tanja Frank Eler for Slovenia on 2026-09-28. The announcement says Wenzl starts on November 1; Frank Eler's start is tied to official publication of the decision. Their terms last six years and are non-renewable.

The EPPO's Hungary page says Hungary became a participating member state on 2026-08-02. It separately ties the start of domestic operations to the twentieth day after appointment of the Hungarian European Prosecutor. Participation and operational launch therefore have distinct conditions.

The Council's institutional explanation identifies investigation and prosecution of offences affecting the EU budget as the office's remit. The EPPO is not a general supervisory authority over every national case, and an appointment does not establish any particular crime.

Editorial analysis. Organisations using EU funds need traceable contracts, delivery evidence and decision processes. The personnel decision matters for institutional capacity, not as a prediction of individual cases' outcomes.
